Shan students only started coming in numbers to Mahachulalongkorn Buddhist University in Bangkok in the early 2000s. This followed on from the many activities of Venerable Prof. Dr. Khammai Dhammasami (Saokhu Loung), which have included, amongst many other things, being an academic assistant and chief secretary for several international conferences at MCU. Nowadays, more than two hundreds of Shan students, monks and lay people are furthering their education at the university.
In 2005, following the advice of Ven Dr Khammai Dhammasami, Shan students founded the Tai Sangha Students Association (TSSA) to assist each other with such things as information, accommodation, communication, and education.
Every year, the head of the association has to be reelected. Last year, the post was filled by Saokhu Nyanasami (Merngsu). This academic year, 2016-2017, Saokhu Nandasami (Tangyan), second year B.A student from MCU, was elected.
The association runs many activities, for example; publishing Sengsiam Journal, a Thai-Tai Dictionary, a Burmese-Shan Dictionary, and several translations. It also grants scholarships for B.A., M.A. and PhD students every year. They have also raised funds to help with natural disaster and victims of war. During the summer they organize a summer school programme in Shan State. They always volunteer to help many events such as the Lik Loung conferences and the Shan State Buddhist University (SSBU).
