On November 5-7, 2016, The International Conference on Kathina and The 1st Kathina Ceremony of SSBU successfully celebrated in Shan State Buddhist University, Taunggyi, Shan State, Myanmar.
It was an international conference on Kathina, especially about Theravada Kathina robe-offering traditions in Buddhist communities around the world. This was our historic conference that presented in both Pali and English medium. The Most Ven. Prof. Dr. Khammai Dhammasami (DPhil, Oxford) led this conference. The generous sponsorships were Aung Pyitan Co.,Ltd and Max Myanmar Group.
On the special event, scholars from 6 countries presented about the kathina and its social application in their own countries. On 5th November 2016, the spoken language was Pali and the following day was in English. They came from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Uganda, Czech Republic and Myanmar.
Mahasangha (s), VIPs, Distinguished guests, observers and participants attended. To help them better understanding, at this time SSBU managed the sound system in the case to listen the language they wanted. Some staffs translated from Pali and English into Thai, Tai (Shan) and Burmese for participants. Our guests were from Thailand, Singapore and Czech Repbulic, Tauggyi local residences and parts of Myanmar. In accordance with the signatories, the total numbers of participants were 197 people.
On 7th November 2016, in the morning at 8:00 a.m. Aung Pyitan Co.,Ltd celebrated the opening ceremony of Master Lodge and donated to SSBU. The Most Ven. Sitagu Sayadaw Dr. Ashin Nyanissara and Shwe Zin Tipitaka Sayadaw Dr. Gandhamalalankara led the ceremony. In the offering ceremony, the Most Ven. Sitagu Sayadaw Dr. Ashin Nyanissara also gave a special dhamma talk as well.
In addition, on November 5, 2016 the DNNA (Daw Nwet Nwet Aye) private high school, Taunggyi, also came and donated their kathina in SSBU. Many teachers and students wore their own uniform beautifully. They performed the tradition dancing as well.
What’s more, each night on November 5-7, 2016, there were such evening dhamma talks, too. The dhamma talk masters were: (a) The Most Ven. Sitagu Sayadaw Dr. Ashin Nyanissara, founder of SIBA; (b) Shwe Zin Tipitaka Sayadaw Dr. Gandhamalalankara and (c) Ven. Vicittabhipala (MA, Kelaniya), SSBU.
To have a successful event, it was depending on many Tai (Shan) Sangha student monks, who are doing their studies at universities in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Yangon, Mandalay and SSBU Residence Sangah (in the year 2016) including Tai Sangha who finished their studies and now living in our homeland also came and joined hand together with us as staffs and volunteers. Everyone worked hard until the conference successfully done.
But, without giving the hand of laities committees of local residences, this conference wouldn’t also run properly. All committees also worked harder than we could imagine in reality. Before the conference started, the SSBU Sangha and sub-committees included our sponsors held preparatory meetings at SSBU for times. We discussed and negotiated in very details but not academic program. However, on Behalf of Shan State Buddhist University, we would like to congratulate to all the participants for your successful contribution on this historic conference, at SSBU.
